- This thesis is considered a step in African sustainable development towards a circular economy society. In-depth, it’s a proposal for implementing a renewable energy plant in the Republic of Sudan as a solution for its poor structured waste management system and the shortage in electricity generation. In the results chapter, the researcher applied a thematic approach to present the data collected from the case study and interviews. It first started by identifying the Reppie project, the motivation behind building it, and the plant combustion operation. In which matched with the aim and problem of the research, which is the poor waste management in Sudan. Moreover, the electricity generation and shortage in Sudan been clarified in depth. As it’s been highlighted that the main reasons for the shortage are the high operating cost in the thermal energy conversion, and the maintenance faults the hydraulic energy conversion is facing. After Analysing the data, and regardless of the different implication that criticized the incineration, it’s been confirmed that the Reppie project serves as a living example in contributing to environmental sustainability in Africa. As it reduces the greenhouse gas emissions and reduces the negative health impacts on residence in urban areas near the plant. However, the proximity of the plant to the areas nearby may play a role in causing hazardous impacts on the health and safety of people in the future. Moreover, although waste to energy technologies are capital extensive, the incineration method is still considered best fit financially wise, it provides great support to energy conversion that may reduce the need for thermal technologies due to its low operation cost, unlike the thermal conversion which is currently not functioning properly. Therefore, implementing this technology is considered yet a step ahead in the sustainable development in the African continent, and an approach towards a circular economy that serves a key answer for the waste management issue and electricity shortage in Sudan.
